Some family trips stay in your memory because of a grand view or a famous meal. This one stayed with me for something simpler: our children laughing in warm water while winter waited outside, and three generations sharing the same short journey through Gyeongju.
We spent one night at Hanwha Resort Gyeongju with my parents-in-law. The resort gave the children the winter water play they had been hoping for, while the next day’s visit to Bulguksa brought back my own childhood memories. I had visited the temple many times on elementary-school field trips. Returning as a parent felt strangely familiar and completely new at the same time.
Why Hanwha Resort Gyeongju worked for our family
For a multi-generational trip, convenience matters more than an ambitious itinerary. Hanwha Resort Gyeongju is in the Bomun Tourist Complex, with family rooms, dining, a sauna, and Pororo Aqua Village in the resort complex. We could settle in, let the children play, and avoid spending the whole day moving between attractions.
The children noticed the Pororo characters before anything else. The colorful lobby and playful decorations made the resort feel like part of the vacation rather than just a place to sleep. Their excitement started before we even reached the pool.
Winter water play at Pororo Aqua Village
Swimming in February felt like a small rebellion against the season. Outside, everyone was wrapped in winter coats. Inside, the children wore bright flotation vests, splashed through the pools, and followed the water around the Pororo-themed play areas.
What I remember most is how naturally the day became a family event. The children did not need a complicated plan. Water, grandparents nearby, and enough time to play were more than enough. Watching them move confidently through the pool made the whole trip feel worthwhile.
The evening view gave the resort another personality. After the daytime noise and splashing, the illuminated water-play structures looked almost like a small winter theme park. It was a quiet ending to a very active day.
Bulguksa: an old place seen through new eyes
The next day, we visited Bulguksa. The walk toward the temple, the painted eaves, the stone terraces, and the pagodas all felt familiar. When I was young, Bulguksa was one of those places that appeared again and again on school field trips. Back then, I probably paid more attention to my classmates and lunch box than to the architecture.
This visit was different. I watched my children climb the steps, make playful poses beneath the lanterns, and run along the long temple corridor. My parents-in-law were with us too, so the visit quietly connected three generations: the schoolchild I used to be, the parent I had become, and the children making their own first memories of the same place.
Bulguksa is important enough to be recognized with Seokguram as a UNESCO World Heritage site, but a family visit does not have to feel like a history lesson. For us, its value was also personal. The temple gave an ordinary winter weekend a sense of continuity.

Breakfast at Asadal

Pororo Aqua Village and sauna prices
For the current fall season, August 24–December 18, 2026, the official base day-pass price is KRW 50,000 for adults and KRW 45,000 for children. The listed guest discount brings weekday prices to KRW 30,000 for adults and KRW 27,000 for children; weekend guest prices are KRW 35,000 and KRW 31,500. Children are charged the child rate from 36 months through elementary-school age.
The hot-spring sauna’s normal price is KRW 13,000 for adults and KRW 11,000 for children. Resort guests are listed at KRW 9,500 and KRW 8,500. Aqua Village usually opens at 10:00 a.m.; on the current fall schedule it closes at 6:00 p.m., with last entry at 5:00 p.m. Seasonal schedules and discounts change, so use these figures only as a planning reference.

Getting there without a car
The resort is inside the Bomun Tourist Complex. Gyeongju City’s current visitor guide recommends local bus 10 for the complex and notes that bus 100-1 stops at hotels and resorts in the area. Routes and intervals can change, so check the city’s real-time bus system on the day you travel. From Gyeongju Station, a taxi is the simplest option for a family carrying luggage.

Tips for a similar family trip
- Check packages before booking separately. A room-and-water-park package can be better value, but only if the included tickets match the number and ages of your family members.
- Plan the pool as the main event. Young children may happily spend most of the day there. A lighter schedule is easier for grandparents too.
- Bring age documents for young children. The Aqua Village may ask for proof for free infant admission or age-based rates.
- Visit Bulguksa early. Morning light is pleasant, and arriving before the busiest period makes the stone steps and courtyards easier to enjoy with children.
- Leave room for nostalgia. Returning to a place from childhood with your own children can become the most meaningful part of the trip, even when it was not the original plan.
Our February weekend was short, but it held two very different kinds of happiness: the noisy, immediate joy of children playing in water, and the quieter feeling of returning to Bulguksa after many years. That combination made Hanwha Resort Gyeongju a particularly memorable family trip for us.
