Saying Goodbye to My BMW 530i: One Last Family Trip to Byeonsan
On October 18, 2019, I brought home a BMW 530i M Sport Plus. It was our family’s first executive sedan, and from the very beginning it felt like more than a new car. It was a milestone—one of those purchases that quietly marks the start of a new chapter.

Over the next six and a half years, that gray 5 Series carried us through ordinary weekdays and long family trips. By the time the odometer had passed 130,000 kilometers, it had become part of the background of our lives: the familiar steering wheel in front of me, family voices behind me, and a destination waiting at the end of the road.
Why the BMW 530i Was So Special to Me
I have driven other cars, but the 530i gave me a combination that is difficult to describe until you have experienced it yourself. The body felt solid, the car remained calm and planted at highway speeds, and every drive had a sense of precision. It was comfortable enough for long family journeys, yet it still made me want to take the longer road home.
What I remember most is the confidence it gave me. On a fast road, the car never felt nervous. The steering, the chassis, and the way everything responded made driving genuinely enjoyable. It never felt like a machine that simply moved us from one place to another. It made the journey itself matter.

That is why saying goodbye was harder than I expected.
Knowing When It Was Time to Move On
By 2026, the situation around the car had changed. Global fuel prices had risen sharply, the warranty was over, and the mileage had climbed beyond 130,000 kilometers. A car at that stage can continue to run well, but larger maintenance bills begin to feel less like a possibility and more like a matter of time.
I started thinking that this was the right moment to change cars while the BMW still felt strong and while my memories of it were still overwhelmingly good. It was a practical decision, but not an easy one. Eventually I sold the 530i and moved to a Tesla Model Y.

The new car suits the moment we are living in, but choosing an electric vehicle was not a rejection of the BMW. If fuel prices stabilize and I buy another internal-combustion car—or simply choose another car in the future—I would gladly consider BMW again. Few cars have given me such a complete sense of solidity, high-speed stability, and driving pleasure.
One Last Trip: Byeonsan, April 3–4, 2026
The final family trip in the BMW took place on April 3 and 4, 2026. We traveled to Byeonsan Beach and stayed at Sono Belle Byeonsan to celebrate the birthdays of my mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
At the time, it was simply a family getaway. Only later did it fully sink in that this would be the BMW’s last trip with us. That knowledge has made the small moments from those two days feel even more precious.
We stopped at Byeonsan Beach and took photos with the sea behind us. Spring had arrived, but the coast still had a cool, quiet feeling. The wide sand, soft gray sky, and gentle waves made a calm setting for the family photographs we brought home.

Nearby lives my mother-in-law’s older sister—my wife’s aunt. We visited her home, and she generously prepared delicious food for us to take back to the resort. There is a special warmth in food made by family, especially when it becomes the centerpiece of a birthday table away from home.
A Birthday Dinner at Sono Belle Byeonsan
Back at Sono Belle, we set the table with the food we had received, added a cake, and celebrated together in the room. It was not an elaborate restaurant event. It was better than that: a comfortable family meal, full of familiar dishes, conversation, candles, and the slightly chaotic happiness that always seems to accompany a family birthday.

Looking at the photos now, I remember the meal and the cake, but I also remember the journey that brought us there. The BMW had carried our family and everything we needed for one more celebration, just as it had done so many times before.
The Seagulls Who Recognized a Shrimp Cracker Bag
One of the funniest memories happened on the beach beside the resort. We brought snacks to feed the seagulls. The shrimp crackers were still hidden inside a black plastic bag, and we had not even opened the package.
The moment we pulled the unopened shrimp-cracker bag out, seagulls that had been far away began flying toward us. They seemed to know exactly what it was. We stood there amazed, wondering how they could recognize the snack before the bag had even been opened.
Within moments, the quiet beach turned into a lively little performance. The birds circled close, waited on the sand, and swooped down for the crackers. It was a simple experience, but it became one of those travel memories that the family will probably retell for years: the day the Byeonsan seagulls spotted their favorite Korean snack from an impossible distance.
More Than 130,000 Kilometers of Family Memories
A car’s mileage is usually presented as a number that lowers its value. To an owner, however, every kilometer represents something different. It is a commute completed safely, a late-night drive home, a holiday with luggage packed into the trunk, or a family member asleep in the passenger seat.
Our BMW’s 130,000-plus kilometers were filled with those moments. The 530i was our first car in this class, and it showed me how reassuring a well-built sedan could feel. It also reminded me that driving can still be enjoyable even when the purpose of the trip is completely ordinary.
The last journey to Byeonsan was a fitting farewell. It contained everything the car had come to represent for us: a long drive, family, good food, a birthday celebration, the sea, and a few unexpected moments of laughter.

Goodbye for Now, BMW
I no longer own the BMW 530i, but I do not feel that the story ended when I handed over the keys. The car remains connected to the places we visited and the people who rode in it. Whenever I remember the stability of a long highway drive or the satisfaction of taking a curve cleanly, I will remember this car.
The Tesla Model Y begins a new chapter for our family. Still, the BMW occupies a permanent place in the chapter that came before it.
Thank you for carrying us for more than 130,000 kilometers. Thank you for making long drives feel effortless and ordinary roads feel worth enjoying. And thank you for one last family trip to Byeonsan.
Some cars are transportation. A few become containers for a family’s memories. For us, this BMW 530i was one of those cars.
