Our Daughters’ First Flight to Jeju: Sono Calm and a Seven-Person Family Trip | 2026 Notes

On October 15, 2022, our daughters took their first flight. My wife’s workplace had selected her for a holiday stay at Sono Calm Jeju, and what began as a trip for the four of us grew into a seven-person family holiday. We spent two nights on the island. This first installment covers the flight, our arrival at the resort and an evening visit to Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market, with separate notes for planning a similar trip today.

Our first-day route at a glance

• Dates: October 15–17, 2022; two nights and three days.

The mistake of announcing a holiday more than 100 days early

My wife’s company called the benefit a summer holiday accommodation program, although our actual trip was in October. The announcement came more than 100 days before departure. We probably should have kept the news between ourselves for a little longer. Instead, I was so pleased that I told the children.

After that, our second daughter, Bokyeong, asked almost every day when we were going to Jeju. A hundred days is a long wait even for an adult. For her, it must have felt enormous. Looking back, those repeated questions are part of the memory, not merely the lead-up to it.

I was excited about flying away together, too. Then I thought of my parents. We invited them and my nephew Taeyeon, my sister’s only son, bringing our group to seven.

“We’re going up!”

By the time we reached the airport, everyone was in a holiday mood. I wondered how the girls would feel when the aircraft left the ground. They responded with amazement rather than fear, calling out “뜬다~~”—roughly, “We’re going up!”

For an adult, a flight can become the part to get through before a holiday starts. For our daughters, takeoff was already one of the main events. Their reaction made this a flight I will remember long after the ordinary details have faded.

Jeju was a much bigger island than the children imagined

After landing, we collected a nine-seat Carnival and set off for Sono Calm. The children seemed to have imagined that an island would be small. Driving across Jeju quickly changed that picture.

I have a rough memory of how long the journey felt, but not a reliable recorded travel time. I would not use it as an airport-to-resort estimate. For a new trip, check a live route and allow separately for collecting the vehicle. With seven travelers, also check luggage capacity when all required seats are occupied, rather than relying on the vehicle’s seat count alone.

Our room looked out toward the sea. The open view, with palms and resort buildings below, made arriving feel particularly good. This was a company-arranged holiday benefit, not a stay for which I can offer a useful public room-rate comparison. Nor does a seven-person trip mean seven people can book one room: occupancy, bedding and the number of rooms need to match the actual reservation.

A walk, a family photograph and no need to rush

We went out onto the paths around the resort, enjoyed the coast and stopped for photographs. The children posed at a heart-shaped photo spot, and we took a picture of all seven of us beside the sea.

There was no need to spend the first afternoon collecting attractions. Being somewhere new with my parents, the girls and our nephew was enough. The resort walk gave us a simple way to enjoy that.

Market food, then back to the resort

That evening we explored Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market and bought food to take back for dinner. I do not have a reliable record of the stalls, dishes or prices, and there are no market photographs in this set. I would rather preserve the evening as we remember it than turn it into a made-up restaurant recommendation.

Returning with dinner also meant we could finish the day without adding another outing. The flight, drive and seaside walk had already given us plenty to remember.

• Confirm the room’s view, occupancy, bedding and cooking arrangements on your booking.
• Check suitable child restraints and space for seven people’s luggage with the rental company.
• Leave room for flight delays and car-collection queues. The resort and Seogwipo market also require a separate drive.
• For the coast, bring a light layer, secure footwear and sun protection, and stay close to children near the water.
• Consider the journey back when buying food, and follow the resort’s food and cooking rules.

The waiting became part of the holiday

My strongest memory of this first day begins before departure, with Bokyeong asking when Jeju was finally coming. Hearing the girls call out at takeoff made all that waiting feel real. In part two, our family moves from looking across the sea to exploring the underwater world at Aqua Planet Jeju.
